History
Kilcommon takes its name from St Coman, said to have lived in the sixth century. It is believed that there were early Christian sites at Kilgalligan cemetery and on the shore west of Knocknalower. Kilcommon is mentioned in the Annals of the Four Masters.
The original civil parish of Kilcommon took in the present Kilcommon parish as well as Belmullet, Ballycroy and Kiltane but in 1873 a reorganisation led to the establishment of Kiltane parish and the present day boundaries of parishes were agreed. Just as the larger division was produced by a decline in priests in Penal times, the smaller divisions were facilitated then by an increase in vocations.
